What happened

A 41-year-old Nashville man was killed in a pedestrian crash early Sunday, July 27, 2025, in the 1300 block of Gallatin Pike South, Metro Nashville Police reported. Investigators said the collision occurred just before 2 a.m. and that the man, identified as Rustin Needer, died at the scene.

Police said a northbound Buick Encore struck Needer while he was in the roadway. The driver stopped after the crash and spoke with responding officers.

What investigators have said so far

In a preliminary account, police indicated Needer was walking in the roadway when he was struck. Fatal crash investigators also learned from a family member that Needer had called to say he was walking home after his vehicle broke down near the Gallatin Pike and Briley Parkway area.

Police did not publicly announce any immediate charges in the case in the initial release, and the investigation remained in the early stages.

Why Gallatin Pike remains a focus

The fatal crash adds to a record of severe pedestrian incidents along Gallatin Pike, a major north-south corridor connecting neighborhoods including Madison and East Nashville. Prior fatal and serious-injury crashes on the route have included incidents in which drivers remained at the scene and others involving hit-and-run allegations, reflecting a range of circumstances that investigators must sort through case by case.

Gallatin Pike has also been cited in local safety discussions because it carries heavy traffic volumes while serving people walking to homes, bus stops, businesses and nearby side streets—especially during low-light hours when visibility can be reduced.

Safety context and ongoing efforts

Nashville has identified segments of Gallatin Pike as areas of concern for serious crashes involving people outside vehicles. In recent years, pedestrian safety advocates and transportation planners have pointed to potential countermeasures that are commonly evaluated on high-injury corridors, including improved lighting, clearer crossings, speed management, and street designs that reduce conflict points.
