Main branch closure continues months after June 2025 garage fire

Nashville Public Library’s Main Library, the system’s flagship downtown branch at 615 Church Street, remains closed as restoration work and independent safety verification continue following a June 10, 2025 fire in the adjacent parking garage. Library schedules and building notices continue to list the Main Library as closed, with services redirected to other branches and online options.

The fire broke out in the multi-level parking structure connected to the library, producing heavy smoke and prompting evacuations from the nearby Renaissance Hotel. No injuries were reported. Firefighters and city officials documented significant damage inside the garage, including a collapsed ramp and compromised structural elements.

Why the library has not reopened

Library updates describe a multi-phase process focused on confirming that the building is safe for staff and the public. The continuing closure is tied not only to cleaning and restoration but also to third-party reviews required before reopening.

  • Restoration and environmental work has included assessment, cleaning, and ongoing air-quality monitoring.

  • Library leadership has emphasized that independent safety verification is a prerequisite to reopening.

  • Separate approvals and coordination have been required for repair and fire-safety improvements, including review by code authorities and the fire marshal.

Library leadership has consistently framed the timeline as dependent on expert review and verification steps required for safe public reentry.

Damage assessment and collection impacts

Library communications have described the building impacts as largely light soot and smoke residue across most of the five-level, roughly 300,000-square-foot facility, with heavier impacts concentrated in smaller areas. The library has also indicated that the overwhelming majority of its circulating materials are considered restorable with cleaning, while other assets—such as artwork and specialized items—have been evaluated as part of the broader restoration effort.

Service continuity: branches and online access

During the closure, Nashville Public Library has continued operations through its branch network across Davidson County and digital services. Public programs, access to computers and Wi‑Fi, and patron support have continued at other locations, while customers have been directed to choose alternate pickup sites for holds and in-person needs.

Parking garage status remains a key variable

The adjacent garage remains closed, and city transportation authorities have overseen decisions about how to address the structure. Library leadership has outlined options that include partial use of lower levels closest to the library under restrictions, while repair work proceeds, or broader demolition and rebuilding decisions. Regardless of the path forward, officials have said the fourth floor will not be used.

As of the most recent public updates and library notices, no firm reopening date has been announced for the Main Library.
