Tuesday Commute: I-840 Closures Begin and Major Bus Detours Hit Hillsboro Route

Morning Traffic and Commute Overview
Nashville commuters are facing a busy Tuesday as several new infrastructure projects and transit detours go into effect this morning, March 10, 2026. While the early morning rush on the major loops of I-24 and I-65 has remained steady, significant lane shifts and project starts in the surrounding counties are expected to impact travel times throughout the day and into the evening hours.
Major Highway Impacts: I-840 and I-65
A major resurfacing and repair project begins today on Interstate 840 in Williamson County. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced that intermittent closures of lanes and ramps will occur from near Lewisburg Pike to the bridge over Harpeth School Road in Thompson’s Station. While much of the heavy milling will take place tonight starting at 8:00 p.m., motorists should be alert for crews and equipment moving into the area throughout the afternoon.
On the north side of the city, the ongoing I-65 widening project continues to affect traffic between Rivergate Parkway and US 31W. Commuters should expect daily lane closures on Long Hollow Pike (SR 174) in both directions from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for bridge work. Additionally, preliminary work to add a northbound lane on Highway 109 near the I-40 interchange will result in shoulder and lane closures during those same midday hours.
Local Road and Bridge Alerts
Within Nashville, several key connectors remain under construction. In Madison, the closure of Forest Park Road has been extended through late March for sidewalk improvements; a detour is in place between Neely’s Bend Road and the Lexington Garden Apartments. For those traveling through downtown, the Woodland Street Bridge is currently in Phase 2 of its repair schedule, and the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge continues to see intermittent partial closures for maintenance.
WeGo Public Transit Detours
Public transit riders should take note of several active detours that began earlier this week. Route 7 (Hillsboro) is currently on a detour from downtown, rerouting via John Lewis Way and James Robertson Parkway. Several stops between WeGo Central and 8th Ave S at Broadway are temporarily out of service. Route 87 (Gallatin-Hendersonville) is also experiencing detours near the downtown core. Riders are encouraged to check the latest schedules as WeGo prepares for a series of public meetings later this month regarding the 'Choose How You Move' service expansions.
Safety Reminder: Deadliest Interchanges
Recent data analysis has highlighted three specific interchanges in the Nashville area that require extra caution due to higher accident rates: I-65 at Rosa L. Parks Boulevard, I-24 at Old Hickory Boulevard in Antioch, and the 'tangle' of I-40 and I-24 near Spence Lane. Commuters are advised to reduce speeds and maintain extra following distance when navigating these complex merges during peak traffic volumes.
