What investigators say happened

A South Nashville encounter between a plainclothes Metro Nashville Police detective and a man in another vehicle escalated into gunfire, leading to attempted criminal homicide charges and a parallel federal firearm case.

Police said the incident occurred on Friday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2025, in a cul-de-sac on Skip Jack Drive. The detective, assigned to the Specialized Investigations Division’s TITANS Unit, was on break and seated inside an unmarked police vehicle when a Hyundai Genesis pulled alongside.

Investigators allege the driver, identified as 52-year-old Otis Beach, yelled at the detective and pointed a handgun in the detective’s direction. Police said the detective drove away to create distance. Authorities allege Beach then fired three rounds, striking the unmarked police vehicle. The detective was not injured.

Arrest, evidence recovered, and initial statements

Police said other detectives located Beach shortly afterward at a residence in the 200 block of Centreboard Court, where he was taken into custody. Investigators reported recovering a 9mm handgun, a cartridge casing from inside the Hyundai, and two additional cartridge casings at the shooting scene.

Police said Beach admitted firing the shots but claimed he did not know the person in the other vehicle was a police officer.

The central allegation in the state case is that shots were fired at an occupied vehicle as the detective drove away.

Search warrant results and the scope of pending allegations

Authorities said a subsequent search warrant executed at the Centreboard Court residence resulted in the seizure of additional firearms, suspected narcotics, cash, and other items. Police reported finding four more handguns, marijuana, fentanyl, cocaine, and multiple items they described as drug-processing equipment, along with $51,563 in cash and property including vehicles and luxury goods.

Investigators also stated Beach was on a 10-year suspended sentence for a felony firearm conviction at the time of his arrest. Police said additional charges were pending beyond the initial attempted criminal homicide allegation.

State charges and federal case now moving in parallel

In Tennessee state court, Beach was charged with attempted criminal homicide related to the shooting. Police reported he was being held on a $300,000 bond.

Separately, federal prosecutors filed a firearm case alleging unlawful possession of a gun by a previously convicted felon. Police indicated the state and federal matters would proceed at the same time, creating two tracks of court proceedings arising from the same episode.
