Significant I-40 Lane Closures and Match Day Detours: Nashville Traffic Update

Significant Weekend Delays Expected on I-40 and Downtown Corridors
Commuters and weekend travelers in Nashville should prepare for notable disruptions today, Saturday, February 21, 2026. A combination of major interstate bridge repairs, morning transit detours, and high-profile sporting events is expected to create congestion throughout the mid-day and evening hours. If you are heading into the urban core or traversing Davidson County, allowing extra travel time is highly recommended.
Interstate 40 Bridge Repair Operations
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has initiated intensive bridge repair operations on Interstate 40 in Davidson County that will impact traffic through Monday morning. Motorists should be aware of the following restrictions today:
- Multiple Westbound Lane Closures: Crews have reduced capacity on I-40 West to facilitate structural maintenance.
- Single Eastbound Lane Closure: A single lane remains closed on the eastbound side, which may cause rubbernecking and slow-downs near the work zones.
- Full Ramp Closure: The ramp at Exit 221A is completely closed to traffic. Drivers who typically utilize this exit should follow posted detour signs and expect heavy volume on secondary routes.
Morning Transit Detours and Public Transport Alerts
WeGo Public Transit has issued several service alerts for the morning hours. From 6:00 AM until approximately 10:30 AM, several key routes will be on detour due to local road activity and bridge maintenance:
- Route 3 (West End) & Route 8 (8th Avenue South): Both routes are experiencing significant detours to and from the downtown Central station, utilizing James Robertson Parkway and John Lewis Way.
- Route 18 (Airport) & Route 75 (Midtown): Passengers heading to Nashville International Airport or the Midtown area should anticipate rerouting. Several stops on 8th Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard near Broadway will not be served during the detour window.
Event Congestion: Nashville SC and Bridgestone Arena
Traffic volume is expected to spike in the late afternoon and evening due to major local events. Nashville SC faces the New England Revolution today at GEODIS Park. To help mitigate traffic, WeGo is offering fare-free rides on Route 52 (Nolensville Pike) and Route 77 (Thompson/Wedgewood) for all match attendees. Additionally, a sold-out Billy Strings concert at Bridgestone Arena and the Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee basketball game at Memorial Gymnasium will likely cause heavy congestion in the SoBro and West End areas starting around 1:00 PM.
