Pulitzer-Winning Drama and Legendary Songwriter Rounds: What's On in Nashville Today

Award-Winning Theater at TPAC

The standout event this evening is the performance of "Fat Ham" at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC). Hosted at the Andrew Johnson Theater, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play by James Ijames is presented as a special co-production between the Nashville Repertory Theatre and the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. This innovative reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet trades a cold Danish castle for a vibrant Southern family barbecue, exploring complex themes of identity and kinship. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m., offering one of the most thought-provoking theatrical experiences of the season in the heart of downtown.

Iconic Nashville Songwriter Rounds

Music City lives up to its reputation today with several high-profile songwriter events that showcase the city's lyrical heart in intimate settings.

  • The Bluebird Cafe: The world-famous venue hosts an "In The Round" session starting at 6:00 p.m. tonight. Featured artists include Michael August, Adam Doleac, Ava Suppelsa, and Austin Nivarel. While reservations are often secured in advance, the venue typically offers a limited number of first-come, first-served seats at the door.
  • February’s Writers' Round: Located at Thistle and Rye in Midtown, this event offers an intimate night of storytelling and acoustic music. Nine talented songwriters will take the stage to share the inspiration behind their original works in a relaxed lounge atmosphere.
  • The Basement East: For those looking for a full-band experience, Kelsey Waldon brings her authentic country sound to East Nashville. Joined by special guest Gabe Lee, the performance begins at 8:00 p.m. and promises a night of poignant storytelling and traditional melodies.

Comedy and Live Entertainment

Those looking for a night of laughter have two excellent options tonight. Stand-up comedian John Crist performs his latest set, "John Crist Live!", at the Grand Ole Opry House at 7:30 p.m. This large-scale comedy event brings one of the industry's most popular touring acts to Nashville's most historic stage. For a more traditional club setting, Big Jay Oakerson takes the stage at Zanies Comedy Club at 7:00 p.m., delivering his signature style of crowd-work and humor.

Art Exhibitions and Cultural Showcases

The Frist Art Museum is currently hosting several major exhibitions as part of its 25th-anniversary season. "In Her Place: Nashville Artists in the Twenty-First Century" is currently showing in the Ingram Gallery, featuring nearly 100 works from 28 celebrated local women artists. Additionally, the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery is featuring "Sistah Griot: The Iconoclastic Art of Barbara Bullock," which highlights provocative narrative paintings. Over at Vanderbilt University’s Divinity School, the "Rooted Reflections: The Fabric of Self Exhibition" by Nija Woods is open for public viewing throughout the day, having opened its doors this morning at 9:00 a.m.
