Official City Notice: Winter Weather Emergency Preparedness

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), in coordination with Nashville city officials, has issued a statewide advisory regarding a significant winter storm system expected to arrive on Friday evening, January 23. In preparation, TEMA and partner agencies will hold a live media briefing today, Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. CST from the State Emergency Operations Center.

National Weather Service forecasts indicate high confidence for accumulating snow, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures that may persist through early next week. Residents are advised of the following:

  • Emergency Shelters: The Metro Emergency Overflow Shelter is prepared to open if temperatures remain at or below 32 degrees for three consecutive hours.
  • Public Safety: The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has mobilized salt and snow removal teams to prioritize interstates and major state routes. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel starting Friday evening.
  • Home Safety: Official advisories recommend that citizens bring pets indoors, check on elderly neighbors, and take precautions to prevent frozen pipes ahead of the projected temperature drop.

Public Meeting Schedule for January 22, 2026

Several Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County meetings are scheduled for today. Residents are encouraged to attend to stay informed on local governance and development:

  • Behavioral Health and Wellness Advisory Council: This regularly scheduled meeting will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to discuss ongoing mental health initiatives and city wellness protocols.
  • District 13 Zoning Community Meeting: A community-led session regarding local zoning updates will be held at the Smith Springs Regional Community Center from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • District 33 Community Meeting (Virtual): Council members will host a virtual community update for District 33 residents from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to discuss local neighborhood concerns.

Infrastructure and Transportation Alerts

The Nashville Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) have issued the following updates for today’s commuters:

  • BNA Roadway Enhancements: A continuous single-lane closure remains in effect on the outbound road connecting Terminal Drive to I-40. This closure is part of the ongoing "New Horizon" expansion project and will persist through April. Motorists should expect delays when exiting the airport.
  • Public Works Activity: Construction crews are finalizing road inspections today before weather conditions deteriorate. All non-essential lane closures will be monitored to ensure the public right-of-way remains clear for emergency vehicles during the upcoming storm.

For immediate assistance with non-emergency city services, residents are reminded to contact hubNashville or dial 311.
