Nashville Commute Update: Icy Conditions and Service Disruptions

Today, Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Nashville remains under a State of Emergency following a significant winter storm that impacted the region over the weekend. Although the active snowfall has subsided, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and local officials continue to urge residents to stay off the roads as a "hard refreeze" has created extremely hazardous driving conditions throughout Middle Tennessee.

Major Arteries and TDOT Updates

TDOT crews, including support teams from Knoxville, are focusing their efforts on primary interstates. However, motorists are warned that secondary roads, interchanges, and bridges remain dangerously slick. Major arteries like I-65, I-24, and I-40 are currently passable only for essential travel, with numerous reports of black ice on ramps and overpasses. While the widening project on I-65 near Rivergate Parkway remains on the schedule, construction activities have been sidelined as crews prioritize ice removal and the clearing of downed trees that have blocked lanes in residential and rural areas. If you must drive, expect significant delays and prepare for sudden patches of ice and debris.

Public Transit and WeGo Alerts

WeGo Public Transit has implemented a delayed start for today. Limited bus service on major corridors resumed at 9:00 a.m. this morning; however, these routes are operating under snow route detours. Commuters should note that the WeGo Star commuter rail and all regional bus services remain completely suspended for the day. Specific route alerts include:

  • Route 3 (West End): No service on Colice Jeanne, Baugh, or Sawyer Brown.
  • Route 4 (Shelby): No service past Shelby Park.
  • Route 23 (Dickerson Pike): Buses are not traveling past the Walmart location.
  • Route 50 (Charlotte Pike): Detours are in effect with no service to Premier Drive or American Road.

The Customer Information Booth at WeGo Central is currently closed, and riders are encouraged to use mobile transit apps for real-time location data, though timing may be inconsistent due to road conditions.

School and Office Closures

Commuters should be aware that traffic patterns are lighter than usual due to widespread closures. Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) and all district offices are closed today. Similar closures are in effect for Williamson, Sumner, Wilson, Cheatham, and Cannon counties. Many non-essential Metro government offices are closed or have moved to remote operations. For those flying out of Nashville International Airport (BNA), access roads are being treated, but travelers should allow at least two hours of additional travel time and check flight statuses before departing.
