What happened

A 51-year-old man was taken into custody after authorities say he led police on a multi-mile pursuit that reached downtown Nashville while he was driving a stolen vehicle. The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning after officers attempted a traffic stop based on an equipment violation: a headlight that was not working.

Police said the driver did not stop, triggering a low-speed pursuit that continued for miles and included travel on Interstate 40 toward the downtown area. As the vehicle neared Broadway, officers discontinued the downtown portion of the pursuit, citing the risks of continuing an active chase through the city’s most congested corridors.

How the pursuit ended

Authorities said the driver was not traveling at high speeds and remained below the posted speed limit for much of the pursuit. The vehicle was later located again, and the driver was taken into custody without a reported crash or injuries announced in initial information released by police.

Investigators alleged the suspect threw items from the vehicle during the pursuit, which contributed to additional charges.

Charges filed so far

Police said the suspect, identified as Jonathon Lewis, was booked on charges that include:

  • Evading arrest
  • Possessing a stolen vehicle
  • Littering

As of the initial update on the arrest, police emphasized that Lewis had not been charged with vehicle theft in connection with the underlying case involving the stolen vehicle.

Possible connection to a Monday carjacking

Authorities said the incident could be related to a reported carjacking that occurred Monday morning in North Nashville. In that case, a victim reported being approached in a parking lot on Jefferson Street, where the suspect allegedly displayed a gun and demanded the victim’s wallet, phone, and car.

Police indicated the vehicle involved in the Tuesday pursuit matched the description of the stolen car reported in the Monday incident, which they said enabled officers to identify it quickly. Investigators also said the carjacking victim must identify Lewis in a lineup before any additional charges tied to that incident are considered.

The case remains active, with investigators separating the confirmed charges tied to the pursuit from potential charges that would depend on victim identification and further corroboration.

Why police backed off near Broadway

Police decisions to discontinue or limit pursuits in dense downtown areas typically reflect operational concerns including pedestrian volume, traffic patterns, and the risk of collisions. In this case, authorities explicitly cited the decision not to actively pursue the suspect through the Broadway area, even though the pursuit had reached the downtown perimeter.
