Significant Delays Expected on I-40 and I-24

Commuters in the Nashville metro area should prepare for a challenging drive this Thursday, February 19, 2026, as several major infrastructure projects reach critical phases. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced significant, continuous closures on I-40 that are expected to cause heavy congestion throughout the day and into the weekend. Additionally, mid-day spot repairs on I-24 in Rutherford and Davidson counties will tighten lane availability during typical off-peak hours.

Major Arteries: I-40 and I-24 Construction

  • I-40 Bridge Repairs: Starting today, February 19, a continuous work zone is being established on I-40 at mile marker 221. This project involves multiple westbound lane closures and a single eastbound right lane closure. Most critically for local commuters, the Exit 221A ramp is fully closed for bridge repair. These closures will remain in effect through February 21.
  • I-24 Spot Repairs: Between mile markers 63 and 68, crews are performing spot repairs to address pavement damage. Expect intermittent lane closures in the eastbound lanes from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and in the westbound lanes from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. While at least two lanes will remain open, the reduction in capacity during the afternoon rush will likely cause backups.
  • I-24 Resurfacing: Overnight travelers should also be aware of multiple eastbound lane closures between mile markers 56 and 62 for resurfacing, scheduled to conclude by 5:00 a.m.

I-65 and Northern Nashville Updates

To the north, work continues on the I-65 widening and improvement project. Nightly lane closures are in effect between mile markers 95 and 99, near the Sumner County line. Commuters should watch for intermittent ramp closures at SR 174 (Long Hollow Pike), Rivergate Parkway, and US-31W. On I-65 South at Fern Avenue (mile markers 86-89), multiple lane closures will occur tonight starting at 8:00 p.m. for bridge conduit replacement.

Public Transit and Local Street Closures

WeGo Public Transit has confirmed that several routes remain on detour due to ongoing construction and infrastructure upgrades. Routes impacted include 3 West End, 84 Murfreesboro, 86 Smyrna, and 87 Gallatin. Passengers are advised to check the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center at WeGo Central for the most current bay assignments and stop removals.

On the local level, the Woodland Street Bridge continues to see Phase 2 repairs, while Nolensville Pike remains restricted near Bradford Hills Drive. Residents are also reminded that NDOT crews are finishing countywide storm debris collection and pothole repairs, which may lead to short-term, rolling roadblocks on residential secondary roads throughout Davidson County.
