Metro Schools Reopening and Storm Recovery Update

Following the significant impacts of Winter Storm Fern, Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) are officially scheduled to return to regular classes on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. While the majority of the city’s school buildings have had power restored, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA have been active in assessing critical power needs at select campuses to ensure a safe environment for students. Residents should remain alert for specific bus route adjustments in areas where secondary roads may still be affected by debris or ice.

Mayor Freddie O’Connell has also issued Executive Order 58, establishing a formal commission to review the Nashville Electric Service (NES) preparation and response to the January winter storm. This commission will hold public hearings to investigate the timeline of power restoration and utility communication during the crisis.

Metropolitan Council and Committee Meetings

Health Advisory: Extreme Cold and Generator Safety

The Tennessee Department of Health and local emergency officials have issued a health advisory due to a Minor Cold Weather Advisory currently in effect for Middle Tennessee. With temperatures expected to remain near or below freezing and wind chills reaching zero, residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure.

Following several confirmed fatalities linked to carbon monoxide poisoning during the recent power outages, health officials stress the following safety mandates:

  • Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, or any enclosed space, even with doors open.
  • Generators must be placed at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and vent openings.
  • Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functioning on every level of your home.
